In 630 CE, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ returned to his home city at the head of ten thousand followers after the Quraysh broke the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Rather than take revenge on those who had persecuted and exiled the early Muslims, he declared a general amnesty for the city's inhabitants and had the Kaaba cleared of idols and rededicated to the worship of God alone. The bloodless, forgiving nature of the conquest is remembered across Islamic tradition as a defining model of mercy in victory.
