Around 650 CE, the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, oversaw the production of a single, standardised written text of the Qur'an and had copies distributed to major cities across the growing Muslim world. This effort built on earlier compilation work carried out shortly after the Prophet's death and helped ensure a consistent, universally recognised scripture as Islam spread rapidly beyond Arabia.
