Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was among the very first to accept Islam and became the fourth caliph in 656 CE. Renowned across Islamic tradition for his knowledge, courage in battle, and eloquence, his caliphate was marked by significant internal political conflict, and he is remembered with particular reverence in Shia Islam as the first Imam.
