In 661 CE, following the end of the First Fitna, Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan established the Umayyad Caliphate and relocated the seat of Muslim governance from Medina to Damascus. The Umayyads went on to preside over one of the fastest territorial expansions in history, extending Muslim rule from Spain in the west to the borders of India and China in the east, before being overthrown by the Abbasids in 750 CE.
