Malik ibn Anas, a jurist based in Medina during the 8th century, founded the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence, one of the four major Sunni legal schools followed today, particularly across North and West Africa. His work Al-Muwatta is regarded as one of the earliest and most authoritative collections of hadith and legal rulings, compiled directly from the practice of the Medinan community.
