Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna, was an 11th-century physician and philosopher whose Canon of Medicine systematically organised medical knowledge of his time and served as a standard textbook in European universities for several centuries. His philosophical works also had a profound and lasting influence on both Islamic and Western thought.
