On 2 January 1492 CE, the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, the last independent Muslim state in the Iberian Peninsula, surrendered to the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. The fall brought to a close nearly 800 years of Muslim presence in Al-Andalus, a civilisation renowned for its scholarship, architecture, and multi-faith coexistence, and was followed in later years by the forced conversion or expulsion of Spain's remaining Muslim and Jewish populations.
