In October 680 CE, Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was killed near Karbala in present-day Iraq along with a small group of family members and companions after refusing to accept the succession of Yazid I. The events of Karbala hold deep and lasting significance across the Muslim world, and are central to the annual Ashura commemorations observed especially, though not exclusively, by Shia Muslims as a symbol of standing for principle against overwhelming odds.
