Al-Razi, a 9th and 10th-century Persian physician and philosopher, pioneered clinical observation in medicine and was the first to correctly distinguish smallpox from measles as separate diseases. His medical encyclopedias were translated into Latin and used as standard textbooks in European universities for centuries after his death.
