Ahmad ibn Hanbal, a 9th-century scholar based in Baghdad, founded the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence and compiled one of the largest and most respected hadith collections of his era, the Musnad. Known for his firm adherence to textual sources over speculative reasoning, he endured imprisonment and persecution for his theological positions during a period of state-imposed doctrinal pressure.
