In 750 CE, the Abbasid family overthrew the Umayyad dynasty and established a new caliphate that would soon found Baghdad as its capital. Under the early Abbasids, Baghdad grew into one of the great intellectual centres of the medieval world, presiding over what is often remembered as the Islamic Golden Age of science, philosophy, and translation.
